is located at

Off Old Hwy 63,
Speedwell,
TN

PowellValley
Elementary School.
The Center was built in 1952 and is maintained and operated
by volunteers. We are doing our best to keep this wonderful
building in good shape. It’s a great place for meetings,
showers, family reunions and a perfect venue for a wedding!
While we have been blessed to add a new roof , new heating
and air conditioning, we are in great need of insulation for
the roof, new windows, new door, gutter repair and interior
paint. A newer refrigerator, stove and cabinets were all
donated in the last few years.
We plan to host community yard sale fundraisers in the
future. The past yard sales were very successful. In
addition to being a venue available for private and
community events the Community Center also hopes to become a
focal point for disaster relief for the west
ClaiborneCounty
area.
Monetary donations for the Community Center insulation,
guttering and supplies can be mailed to

The 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, as part of Col. John F.
DeCourcey's 26th Brigade, marched south from their stronghold at
Cumberland Gap toward the small town of Tazewell, Tennessee, on
August 2, 1862.
The purpose of their expedition was to find and acquire forage and
supplies for the Federal garrison holding Cumberland Gap. During
several days of foraging and extended trips further south of
Tazewell, some periodic skirmishes with Rebel cavalry were
encountered but the troops were successful in filling their wagons
with much needed food and hay for their animals.
Col. DeCourcey knew a large Confederate force was camped south of
the Clinch River, not too distant from Tazewell, however, did not
anticipate any major engagement would take place. On the Wednesday
morning of August 6, however, DeCourcey would be confronted by a
vastly superior Rebel force commanded by Col. Thomas Hart Taylor.

Plans are underway for the second phase of the
restoration of the OLD Jail!
The re-pointing on the bricks and mortar on the chimney,
south side and the front of the building has been done.
The north and back side of the building is the next to
be done in 2014.
This work is being funded in part with funds from the
Historical Preservation Fund under an agreement with the
National Park Service and the Tennessee Historical
Commission.
We are grateful for the grant but our fundraising
efforts have just begun. To continue to receive grants
we need to raise matching funds for continuing
restoration. Please send donations to: PO Box 32,
Tazewell, TN 37879 or call our office: 423-526-5737 for
more information.
